Jesus opens an opportunity for me to befriend a drug addicted, sexually trafficked, attempted murder surviving, mentally and sexually abused prostitute. We remain friends for over a year, speak intimately about her life, and spend time talking Jesus. She is not currently homeless, but has been in the past and could be again in the future.
Driving by one day I notice my friend selling personal items in front of where she lives. I ask, “What’s up?” implying, why are you selling your stuff? She replies, “I need the money.” We speak for a moment about random, insignificant issues and I tell her “I’m going to pray for you.” BING!!! That is what most Christians do; we pray, but rarely meet any real needs. I pray and leave.
As I am driving away Jesus tells me in my spirit “Give her money.” I ask Him “How much?” He says “$200.” I immediately go to my bank, withdraw $200 and drive back over to my friend. I park, get out the car, and walk toward her. I reach into my pocket and she must have known what I was going to do, because she starts backing away with her arms extended out saying, “I can’t take anything from you.” I tell her, “This isn’t from me. It’s from Jesus. A gift. No questions asked.” She cries. We hug and I pray for her again. 2000 years ago, Jesus meets the needs of the least of these. Today, we do it with the intention of long-lasting life results. In regard to my “BING!!!” moment, consider 1 John 3:13-22: “let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth,” for this is pleasing in His sight!
