Beelzebub (also Baal-zebub, Baalzebub, Bealzebub, Beelzebul), in pagan culture, is the Dung-god and was an epithet given to Ba’al, the chief god in the Canaanite pantheon. He’s originally known as “Ba’al, the prince.” He’s the Prince of Demons and to some he appears under monstrous forms, such as the figure of a misshapen calf, or that of a goat having a long tail; at the same time, he manifests most frequently as an enormous fly.
In contemporary Christianity, Beelzebub has simply become an alternative name for Satan or the Devil. In Monotheistic Judaism, he’s known as the “Lord of the Flies.” In the Old Testament, when King Ahaziah of Israel fell ill, he sends messengers to call upon Ba’al-zebub (Beelzebub) for a prognosis and is rebuked by the prophet Elijah for doing so (2 Kings 1:2-3). This is the only appearance of Beelzebub’s name in the Old Testament. However, Beelzebub’s name reappears in the New Testament when the Pharisees accuse Jesus of casting out demons in Beelzebub’s name (Matthew 12:24); he’s also mentioned in Matthew 10:25, and Mark 3:22 and Luke 11:18-19, being called “prince of demons” in Matthew and Mark, and openly compared with Satan in Luke.
In contemporary culture, Beelzebub is huge in Anime. He’s summoned and appears in the television series Metalocalypse, makes an appearance in High School DxD, is the focus of the Beelzebub Japanese manga series and much more. He appears on the BBC Radio 4 comedy show, Old Harry’s Game. Beelzebub is popular in American literature, video games, both Marvel and DC comics and he also gets a mention in the tragic 1975 Queen song, Bohemian Rhapsody. Here, the main character is down on his luck, kills a man, commits suicide, and goes to hell where he pleads in their evil court setting. Beelzebub (the judge) enters the courtroom with a flash of lightning, the courts “clown” demon jurors mock the young man, find him guilty, and will not let him go. Beelzebub delivers the verdict and assigns punishment with a devil, who’s put aside [for me] to torment him forever.

I wrote this page in 2022. I have met Beelzebub on the battlefield of spiritual warfare many times, but on 15 August 2024 Jesus opens my spiritual eyes and I see the being we refer to as Beelzebub. The reader can click the link below to read this experience.
