In the Bible, Abaddon is both a place and a person (spiritual being):
- Job 26:5-6, person, (5) “The departed spirits [shades – shadows, spirits; Rephaim – ancient tribe of giants] tremble. Under the waters and their inhabitants. (6) “Naked is Sheol [Hell, the underworld] before Him, And Abaddon [the spirit and place of destruction] has no covering.”
- Job 28:22, place, “Abaddon (god of Destruction) and Death say, “With our ears we have heard a report of it.”
- Job 31:12, place, “For it would be fire that consumes to Abaddon (place of destruction, hell), and would uproot all my increase.”
- Psalm 88:11, place, “With your lovingkindness be declared in the grave, Your faithfulness in Abaddon?”
- Proverbs 15:11, place, “Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the LORD, how much more the hearts of men!”
- Proverbs 27:20, place & person, “Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied, Nor are the eyes of man never satisfied.”
- Revelation 9:11, person, “They have as king over them, the angel of the abyss, his name in Hebrew is Abaddon [Destruction], and in the Greek he has the name Apollyon [Destroyer].
Abaddon is the Hebrew term for this being, which means “place of destruction.” In The Book of Revelation he is a being that personifies the abyss. His Greek title is Apollyon, which means “The Destroyer.” Abaddon is the angel of death, destruction, and the netherworld. In the Gnostic texts of The Acts of Thomas Abaddon is called the king of an army of locusts; which, oddly enough, are released out of the abyss in Revelation chapter 9. Azazel The Destroyer is Abaddon/Apollyon. Asmodeus reports to Abaddon.
